Happy Things: NKOTBSB, Bananas & Pinterest

Month seven.  July.  How did we get here so quickly?  I don’t know about you friends, but this year seems to be going faster than ever.  It seems like only weeks ago we were singing ‘Auld Lange Syne’ and ushering in 2011.  I often wish there was a pause button. Or that I had the ability to freeze time.  After seeing X-Men a couple of weeks ago, I would definitely want my superhero power to be able to freeze time.  You know, like Evie from Out of this World.

Super powers aside, another month means another edition of Happy Things.  And first up is…

// NKOTBSB.  After months and months of waiting, the day had finally arrived.  My Backstreet Boys were back.  Some of you may remember that Matt surprised me with tickets to the San Jose concert in February for Valentine’s day.  It had been 10+ years since the last time I saw them in concert.  But I still screamed like a teenage girl and sang along as loud as I could.  Because some things you just don’t outgrow.  No cameras were allowed but that’s where a little iPhone and Instagram come in handy.

// Bananas.  No, not the kind like how I acted at when the BSB boys came on stage.  I’m talking about the edible ones.  Especially in mini form.  While grocery shopping the other day, I saw these and had to buy them.  Matt didn’t quite understand why needed to purchase 19 of them.  I replied, “because they are so cute.”  And the cuter they are, the better they taste.  Obviously.

// Pinterest.  I held out for so long.  I really did.  I didn’t need yet another thing to distract me during work hours.  But with so much lazying around after surgery, I gave in.  And now, I’m totally hooked.  The best thing about Pinterest is being able to find and organize inspiration.  I love anything creative and this is such a great way to stay inspired and gather ideas.  Whether your feeling crafty, looking to decorate a room, bake some sweets or plan a wedding, it’s such a great source to find things you like.  If anyone wants an invite, comment below or shoot me a message.  Just note, time flies while your pinning.  And it gets super addicting.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you. 🙂

Happy Weekend!

Crutches and Scars

I heard sounds.  In the distance.  Mumbling.  Words I tried to make out but couldn’t.  My mind was awake but I couldn’t seem to open my eyes.  Groggy but determined, I rubbed my face and slowly looked up.  “Hello, honey,” the nurse said.  Minutes later, Matt appeared with a huge smile on his face.  He kissed my forehead and said proudly, “It’s over, you did it.”  He reached for my hand and gave it a quick squeeze.  I felt weak and shaky.  But relieved.  It was finished and I could go home.  And in that moment, nothing sounded better.

Two weeks ago, I had knee surgery.  It was a day that I had been dreading for months.  Over the past year, I’ve had an ongoing battle with my knee.  I tried everything I could to fix the problem but nothing seemed to work.  The last and final option was knee surgery.  Other than having my wisdom teeth removed, I’ve never come close to having any sort of surgery.  I was freaked out by the whole process and have accepted that I am a total wimp when it comes to anything with blood, needles and doctors.  But this was different than just a doctor’s visit or a routine testing.  It was a few moments of clarity among the chaos of IV’s, doctors and the eventual anesthesia.

This clarity comes in the form of crutches.  Sure, there are the kind that have helped me get around these past few weeks.  But I’m talking about the crutches of life.  The things we depend on.  The people we rely on.  The God we believe in.  When you spend your days completely reliant on others to help you, you start to see things a bit different.  I’ve realized I still take a lot of things forgranted.  Both little and big.  My health and time being the two biggest.  Neither is guaranteed and every single day I should be appreciative and grateful for every blessing, both large and small.

When I awoke after surgery, all I felt was thankful.  Thankful that everything went ok.  Thankful that it was over.  Thankful to my husband for being there.  Thankful for all the phone calls to make sure everything went well.  Thankful for all the prayers from friends and family.  Because I really felt them.  I don’t know how I would have gotten through that day without prayer and God.  Or the days that followed.

About a week ago, I was finally able to walk again without crutches.  Each day I’m feeling better and stronger.  It will completely heal eventually and all I will be left with is a scar.  A scar on my knee to remind me to always be grateful.

Treasure those people who are your “crutches”.  Be thankful for all that you have.  Hugs to you all!

ramona - yes indeed. Thankfulness is always on my mind everyday. I try not to take for granted any of my blessings.

Lori - If your chosen career wasn’t photography, it could be writing. I totally enjoy reading your descriptive, insightful blogs. This one is one of my favorites so far. Gratitude and happiness go hand in hand — wishing you both of these blessings each day.

Charlie - Awesome post, Kim. Very insightful perspective – I had the same thoughts a couple of years ago after going under myself. Glad to see the recovery is progressing. 🙂

Erika + Lantz: San Francisco Engagement

Even though this past Tuesday was officially the first day of summer, San Francisco was a bit slow on getting the memo.  It was freezing in SF last Saturday as we began this engagement shoot.  It was windy, foggy and cold but that didn’t stop Lantz and Erika from bringing it.  And these two brought it.

Despite the less than perfect weather,  I loved this engagement session.  Besides being quite the stunning couple, Lantz and Erika are two incredibly sweet and kind hearted people.  The love they have for one another is truly something special.  It’s the kind of love that moved them from Ohio to California to start a new life…together.  The kind of love that led to a romantic proposal with a message in a bottle.  The kind of love that warms my heart to be able to photograph.

Erika and Lantz, thank you!  It has been such fun getting to know you guys.  I’m so glad our paths crossed and wishing you guys a wonderful year of wedding planning!  xoxo

Happy Things: Coco, Instagram & The Voice

I don’t know why but every time June rolls around, I get excited.  I haven’t had a proper summer break in years but there is something about summertime that I just didn’t outgrow.  Maybe it’s the warm weather or BBQ’s.  Or perhaps all the summer blockbusters or my love of swimming.  But without a doubt, my favorite part of summer has to be traveling.  This summer, we’ll be heading to Chicago and then later this year, Thailand and Hong Kong.  It’s our first time to both Chicago and Thailand so if anyone has advice or tips, we’d love to hear them!

And since it’s a June, it’s time for another edition of Happy Things.  This month’s batch are 3 things that have been taking up a good amount of my free time as well as keeping me entertained.

// I love to laugh.  If you can make me laugh, I instantly like you.  Conan O’Brien is one such guy.  He’s one of my favorites and thanks to my DVR, I never miss a show.  Last week, he gave the commencement speech at Dartmouth college.  If you have the time, watch the whole thing below.  Funny as ever but with good advice for anyone.  My favorite line, “Work hard, be kind and amazing things will happen.”  Oh Coco, I love you!

// Instagram. If you own an iPhone and like taking pictures with it, you seriously need to download this app.  It makes sharing your photos on Facebook or Twitter a breeze and you can add a filter to spice up your photos to your liking.  I’m completely addicted to it and love that it’s a new and creative way to share photos.  A few recent shots of mine using Instagram…

// And lastly, my latest TV love, NBC’s The Voice.  A show all about talent and people who can actually sing.  It’s a refreshing twist in a sea of blah talent shows and they’ve got some real good people with some darn good vocals.  And I loved this clip from Ellen as she talked about the show.

Happy Weekend!

Melissa - That Conan speech was really funny! 🙂 I love that instagram picture of Chloe… so sweet!

June 17, 2011 - 5:46 pm

Adrienne - Hey Kim! Yay for happy things! Jerry and I were watching Conan’s speech too together and were cracking up. Ooh, also, have you heard of the PhotoSplit camera app for iphone? Jerry’s best friend developed that app and it lets you easily make collages and layer photos on your iphone. haven’t tried it myself since we don’t have an iphone, but looks like a good creative outlet and that it’d be pretty fun to use 🙂 hope everything else is going well!

Janet - I was totally listening to the Conan speech at work from your blog!! he’s SO funny! have a great weekend! 🙂

Celebrating May

Prior to a few weeks ago, the last time Matt and I were at a graduation together was in 2008.  He had received his BA from college and boy, was life different then.  At that time, we were engaged and getting married in 3 months.  We were living 2 1/2 hours apart and would only get to see each other on the weekends.  That is, if we were lucky.  Our schedules were opposite and it didn’t allow us to spend much time together.  And no matter how hard we tried, texts, emails and phone calls couldn’t replace that missing piece in our daily lives…each other.

Even after we got married, our schedules remained quite different.  He worked in sports, which almost always meant late nights and weekends.  It was around this time that I became secretly jealous of couples that got to work together.  Or at the very least, those who shared similar schedules.  But life has a funny way of working itself out.

As I sat in the pew of the church a few weeks ago and cheered Matt on as he received his Master’s, I couldn’t help but smile.  A big ol’ smile.  Even though life can still be chaotic and our schedules still don’t always align, we always make time for us.  Everyday.  There is a lot in life that comes and goes, but I only have one husband.  We will only be at this time in our lives once.  Life is about celebrating the moments.  And this May, there was a lot to celebrate.

// Graduation day!  I was one extremely proud wife.

// Birthdays.  And delicious bundt cake.

// And the everyday moments.

Thankful for such a wonderful month.  And June, you’ve got some big shoes to fill.  Happy Monday!
